Sanitaryware article published in Ceramic Forum International (March 2010)
Abstract
Ceramic engineers employed in the sanitaryware industry devote a great deal of time and effort to ensure that the body formulations used in their plants achieve the best possible results. These formulations need to take into account the raw materials and the manufacturing techniques which are available as well as the
skills of the workforce. Changing a body formulation can have an impact on the entire manufacturing process and a reformulation is not considered lightly. In addition many engineers do not have easy access to laboratory or pilot scale facilities to prove a reformulation preparatory to introducing a new ceramic body in full scale production.
With these points in mind this article examines the reasons why a ceramic engineer might carry out a reformulation and how Imerys Sanitaryware can assist him in achieving his objectives.
